A Taste of Café Javas

It's the crunch

It's the munch

It's the deliciousness that packs a punch

It's the drums

It's the dance

It's the fabled service with a happy stance

It's the sip of milky sweetness tickling the tongue

It's the dip of freshness ringing taste buds' alarm

It's the fizz of coolness washing down humid traffic jam

It's with fashion friends

It's with business trends

It's with a passionate lover

It's a chance to be unbothered

It's the air of peace recovered

It's the joy of enzymes discovered

It's the whiff of cherished moments with sister and brother

It's the sound of glasses clinking between mother and father

It's the total taste of satisfaction at Cafe Javas.

Above The Shallow

Follow, Follow, Follow, Follow

Who do we follow?

Why do we follow?

What do we follow?

Follow the scientist

Placate the atheist

Tolerate the artist

Become the realist

Or smile for the universe's Dentist?

Follow the Prophet

Or follow the Apostle?

Follow the crotchet

Or follow the Living Epistle?

Follow the Man of God;

Reverend, Apologist, Archbishop

Clasped hands, bowed knees;

Daddy, Papa, My Lord,

Or the King of Kings?

Wash the feet of diamond studded cleats

Or the cracked jigger-filled soles of street kids?

Kiss the hands of the Priest

Keep the dirty laundry of the pulpit neat

Make the dessert of false doctrine a favorite treat

Or feed on a platter of the Word's meat?

Ignore your family's troubles

Befriend the crumbs the dog daily swallows

Maintain the posture of a malnourished callow

Or ingest on the digest of Wisdom's bellow

Follow the seed

Follow the deed

Follow the fleet

Follow the rhythm of entangled feet

Or dance to the tune of freedom's beat?

The fastest way to the soul is the bosom

The fruit of labor is lack's blossom

Stress and depression as bold as Lamar Odom

Or inhale the true breath of Love's Kingdom?

Follow the ladder

Follow the leader

Follow the bleeder

Or follow the road cheaper?

Follow the nourishing river of Honor

Forget not your Maker

Forget not MY commands;

Follow your heart

Follow your pacesetter from the start

Follow the Groom who will never be apart

Follow, Follow, Follow, Follow

Who do we follow?

Why do we follow?

What do we follow?

Dear Michelle

 I stood idly by

All the messages I did not reply

All the moments I closed my eyes

To your silent cry.

I did not protect you,

I did not look after you

Like I was supposed to.

Time and time again

I abetted abuse

To misuse you;

I enlightened eyes to undress you.

I looked aside

When the disheveled hair on the chest

Pricked you.

I held my nose

When the musky scent of sweat

Nauseated you.

I clapped for him

I did not reprimand him

The first time.

I did not throw him out

The second time.

I feigned absence

When he came into your room

The third time.

I thought your smiles were genuine

I thought you locked your room

To pray and read your books,

I thought you asked for paracetamol

To relieve the pain of Saskatchewan's toll.

Nothing I do can bring back what you lost back then

Nothing I write can numb your pain.

Nothing but Grace can make you feel whole again.

ABOUT ONE LAST SMOKE

 Grief.

Grief is a shared unit of the human condition, an emotion that hard as we may try, we cannot escape. For many years, I had been running away from grief, particularly grief as pertains to the loss of a loved one. I often testified, thanking God that I had never lost anyone close to me. I never knew that portion of grief, I never thought about how it would feel. Even when people I knew lost their loved ones, I prayed for them, consoled them, but from a distance. From the safe position of not feeling the pain that they were feeling.

Feeling.

Then, the unthinkable happened. Like a thief in the night, grief made its move; swiftly, definitively. He struck, and immediately, I got added to the list of those who had lost a loved one. Someone I had talked to, someone I had shared a laugh with, someone I had prayed for, someone I had cared for, someone I had touched...someone that meant the world to my best friend. Unthinkable...I couldn't think. What happened next shocked me. In the hours that followed, I was bereft of feeling (weird right?). Nothing! No tears, no sadness, no nothing.

But as the days went by, I discovered that most of my appetites had deserted me. Sleep was a luxury, no dish or meal was worth putting in my tummy, and my beloved TV became a vessel transporting noise pollution. I was numb... numb to all but voices. Voices that debated existential notions; the meaning of life, the certainty of death, what happens after death, etc. Voices seeking words that could aid the ailing heart of a best friend.

The pen

Naturally, these voices longed to be heard. So I transferred them onto paper. The written word was the other appetite that remained alive. With each stroke of the pen, feelings I never felt frothed and heaved. Paper after paper getting overwhelmed with questions, with grief, with metered words to a best friend, with hope...with comfort from God.

One Last Smoke is a statement of loss; loss of life, loss of love, loss of hope. Loss of fear, loss of sin, loss of slavery, loss of rejection. It is a journey of reflection; fear, and sorrow, but also; hope, love, comfort, and transformation.

My prayer is that with every title, every paragraph, every syllable, and every punctuation mark, you will be taken on a personal journey, a journey that will lead you straight home.
